DSS wanted to engage with its staff more efficiently and broadly. They were looking to mine the collective knowledge and diverse expertise of their staff for ideas about how to improve organisational strategy and tackle the big challenges facing the department. DSS decided to use MindHive - in a big way. They brought in over 2200 staff members and asked them help develop ideas and solutions to the big issues in an open, collaborative environment that allowed people to contribute where they could, when they could.

In the department’s own words: “MindHive represents an easy way to collect a wealth of policy and programme knowledge from DSS staff with a wider range of backgrounds and experiences than would otherwise be available. It allows policy makers and programme designers to ask anyone, regardless of their level, role or location, for feedback to gain the most insightful, innovative and broad range of policy advice available. It also facilitates conversations with people in other government agencies, academia, the not-for-profit sector and the private sector that would otherwise be impossible”.

Queensland Government Personalised Transport Reform.

The personalised transport industry is facing challenging times - technology continues to advance and enable alternative models for business and service delivery, customers are empowered by choice, business and customer relations are changing, and governments are challenged to respond to new business models. The independent Opportunities for Personalised Transport (OPT) Review Taskforce was tasked with identifying how best the government can meet public interest by identifying opportunities that enable improved access for customers and industry, lifting regulatory and commercial barriers to improve cost effectiveness for industry, customers and government, resulting in greater choice ensuring safety quality is upheld. It was a big challenge requiring lots of input and generating lots of interest, the taskforce looked to implement disruptive technologies into their processes to ensure they left no stone unturned.

So as part of the consultation process, the team used MindHive to engage expertise, analysis and thought leadership from their existing stakeholders and the general public. Following a period of three weeks consultation via the Hive, contributions were synthesised with the continuing economic analysis and presented to Queensland Government via the White Paper.

Department of Justice and Attorney-General, Queensland

The Queensland Department of Justice and Attorney-General (Q-DJAG), have engaged with the MindHive problem solving community on how to prevent youth offending. Q-DJAG acknowledged that the myriad of complex issues around youth offending required an open approach to solutions. The solutions needed to balance the inherent disadvantage of youth at risk of offending, and the legal and social consequences of their offences. Through this initiative, Q-DJAG increased the capacity of the youth justice community to work with experts to develop ideas big and small.

Department of Premier and Cabinet, NSW

The Department of Premier and Cabinet NSW, engaged the MindHive community around youth homelessness. With the aim of providing better solutions to the agencies delivering services in this space MindHive was useful as an open-collaboration space. The Sentencing Council of Queensland

The Sentencing Council of Queensland was re-established in consultation with the MindHive community. The Council’s MindHive activities focused on better delivering on their objectives of informing and engaging the community. Relevant to youth, the Council sought out alternative sentencing models the Council might implement. The capacity to engage expertise easily, and readily from Scotland to Chinchilla creates a more open environment for the Council to problem solve.

The capacity for MindHive to be used as a tool to increase the engagement of young people’s voices in education and community well-being is enormous. A youth and education marketplace of ideas could be an extension of a school or youth program’s opening up knowledge and resources to any young person with a desire to solve problems and make a difference.
